The current MRG Studio builder supports the thin 80GB, 120GB, and Late 2009 thin 160GB models. Thick 160GB repair configurations are not stocked in the visual builder, although this guide includes the board for identification purposes.
What the 128GB limit looks like
A limited iPod may restore while recognizing only about 128GB of a larger card, or it may behave unpredictably when a build attempts to address capacity beyond the firmware’s range. Reformatting the card, changing a back plate, or installing a larger battery does not change the firmware limit.
The practical solution is not to keep repeating restores. First identify the model and firmware, then match the storage plan to what the logic board can support.
How to check the installed firmware
- Start the iPod normally.
- Open Settings.
- Choose About.
- Scroll until the software version appears.
Exterior engravings are not enough. Replacement backs are common, and a modified iPod may contain a different logic board or firmware than its case suggests. If the iPod cannot boot, MRG Studio can confirm the relevant details during inspection.
When version 2.0.4 is required

The repair builder automatically adds the current $40 firmware service when all of these are true:
- The selected model is an affected 80GB or 120GB board.
- The customer chooses 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB storage.
- The iPod is running standard limited firmware.
This keeps the estimate understandable: a 128GB flash package does not add a service the customer does not need, and an already-converted iPod is not charged twice.
When version 2.0.5 means no conversion is needed
If the About screen already reports version 2.0.5, the iPod does not need to be changed to 2.0.4 to remove the 128GB limit. In the builder, select Version 2.0.5 already installed. Larger compatible storage can then be priced without the extra firmware charge.
The same applies when version 2.0.4 is already installed. If the version is unknown, the builder flags the configuration for review instead of assuming the $40 service is required.
What the conversion does not change
The firmware conversion does not turn an earlier logic board into later hardware. A converted 6th-generation 80GB or thick 160GB board does not gain inline headphone-control support. The 120GB 6.5-generation board already supports inline controls before conversion.
