An iPod Classic can appear to work normally even when its original hard drive is beginning to wear out. Freezing, skipped songs, slow menus, failed restores, and a Red X can all point to drive trouble—but SMART data can provide more useful evidence than symptoms alone.
Full-sized iPods from several generations include a built-in Diagnostic Mode. This guide focuses on the models that use the following steps to display the HDSMARTData screen.
How to open the SMART data screen
1. Restart the iPod
Make sure the Hold switch is off. Press and hold Menu and the Center Button until the iPod restarts and the Apple logo appears.
2. Enter Diagnostic Mode
As soon as the Apple logo appears, keep holding the Center Button and move your other finger from Menu to Previous/Rewind. Hold Center Button and Previous/Rewind until the diagnostic screen appears.
3. Open the manual hard-drive test
Choose Manual Test, then navigate to:
The iPod will display several hard-drive statistics. A label may be abbreviated or spelled slightly differently depending on the model.
4. Exit Diagnostic Mode
When finished, press and hold Menu and the Center Button until the Apple logo appears. The iPod will restart normally.
What the SMART data values mean
Reallocs
Reallocs are sectors of the hard drive that became unusable and were remapped to spare areas of the disk. This is the most important value when evaluating an original iPod hard drive. Even a few Reallocs confirm that the disk has developed damaged areas, although they do not necessarily mean it will stop working immediately.

- 0 Reallocs
- Ideal. No damaged sectors have been remapped.
- 1–10 Reallocs
- The drive has recorded some damage. Consider the iPod's symptoms and whether the number increases over time.
- More than 10
- MRG Studio generally recommends replacement, particularly when the iPod also freezes, skips songs, disconnects, or fails to restore.
Pending Sectors
Pending Sectors are areas the hard drive had trouble reading but has not yet confirmed as permanently damaged or successfully remapped. A value above zero deserves attention, but it does not tell the whole story by itself. The number can later return to zero, or those sectors may eventually become Reallocs.
Pay closer attention when Pending Sectors appear alongside increasing Reallocs, freezing, slow menus, skipped songs, repeated restore errors, clicking, or repeated spin-up sounds.
PowerOn Hours
PowerOn Hours is the approximate total time the hard drive has spent operating. A low number does not guarantee a healthy drive, and a high number does not automatically mean it is failing. Age, shock, heat, and the condition of the disk surface also matter.
Start/Stops
Start/Stops records how many times the hard drive has spun up and stopped. An iPod frequently stops its drive after loading music into memory, so this number can become quite high during normal use. It is useful background information, but not proof of failure by itself.
Retracts
Retracts records head retractions and can be influenced by an unexpected loss of power or physical movement. Some Retracts are common in an older portable device. Consider the value alongside Reallocs, Pending Sectors, unusual noises, and operating problems.
How to judge the overall condition
SMART data is most useful when combined with the way the iPod actually behaves. Do not rely on one number by itself.
A dependable snapshot
- Reallocs and Pending Sectors are 0
- Menus respond normally
- Songs play without freezing
- Syncs and restores succeed
- No clicking or repeated restarts
Back up and monitor
- A small number of Reallocs
- Pending Sectors above 0
- Values are increasing
- Occasional menu pauses
- Songs sometimes skip or load slowly
Plan for replacement
- More than 10 Reallocs
- Reallocs continue to increase
- Freezes, failed restores, or Red X
- Computer slows while connected
- Clicking, grinding, or repeated spin-up
SMART data is a snapshot. If the drive is questionable, back up important files and check the values again later to see whether its condition is getting worse.
What to do if the hard drive is failing
Replace it with another mechanical drive
This keeps the iPod close to its original configuration, but replacement mechanical drives are also aging and remain vulnerable to shock.
Upgrade to flash storage
An iFlash adapter and compatible flash storage can replace the mechanical drive. A properly installed conversion offers better resistance to drops and vibration, faster library access, lower power consumption, larger storage options, and room for a higher-capacity battery in many configurations.
The iPod must be opened carefully, compatible parts and storage must be used, and the iPod must be restored after installation.

Does checking SMART data erase the iPod?

Is one Pending Sector enough to mean the drive is bad?
Not necessarily. A Pending Sector is an unstable area awaiting confirmation or remapping. Consider it alongside Reallocs, the iPod’s symptoms, and whether the value changes.
Can an iPod still work with high Reallocs?
Yes. A drive can continue working after damaged areas have been remapped. However, high or increasing Reallocs mean the drive is deteriorating and should not be trusted with irreplaceable files.
Are high Start/Stops proof of a failing drive?
No. An iPod’s hard drive normally starts and stops many times to conserve battery power. Consider Start/Stops alongside Reallocs, Pending Sectors, unusual noises, and actual operating problems.
Will restoring the iPod repair bad sectors?
